Re-capture the Coastival spirit this summer

Fans of the popular Coastival arts festival will get the chance to re-capture the spirit of the event when a special summer picnic is held later this month.

Arts and music lovers will get the chance to chill out at the free picnic in the gardens of the Woodend Creative Industries Centre in The Crescent, Scarborough on Sunday 24th July from 1pm to 5pm.

The picnic will feature music provided by DJ Tooley and friends and there will also be lots of other arts activities going on.

Music will include southern fried soul, New Orleans style R&B, Blue note jazz, reggae and funky summer tunes.

Organiser Wendy Clews said: "We had a summer picnic last year and it went down really well.

"Everyone is welcome, just turn up with your picnic and a blanket (alcohol is allowed) and enjoy the afternoon."

The second Coastival arts festival was held in February and doubled its attendance numbers compared with the first event, in 2009.

Attendances at events over the three days in February were 19,851 - which is 120% greater than the first Coastival.

The impact on Scarborough's economy of this year's festival is put at £361,584 - an increase of £146,001 on 2009.

Coastival was held across three days, from Friday 18th to Sunday 20th February and featured 120 events in 30 venues. These included music, comedy, theatre, arts, performance and activities for children. The next full Coastival will be in 2013.
